Product images 404 on alternate storeviews only

Question

I recently got a Security Scan warning at Magneto.com about %pub% directory setup. I fixed it. The site appears fine except I am running a multi store setup which each store setup as SUBFOLDERS. The alternate sites at example.com/ca/ and example.com/gb/ appear fine but on the product pages the product images are missing.

I noticed if you go to my main site and view a product such as https://www.example.com/buy-widgets.html for instance the image url is https://www.example.com/media/catalog/product/cache/941203cc2e2922b7ea4caf8b9f5cbaa8/f/a/image-of-widget.png and it works. If you go THAT same page on the /ca/ page https://www.example.com/ca/buy-widgets.html … the product image is https://www.example.com/media/catalog/product/cache/48282d7234173eec92424c7aed31f915/f/a/image-of-widget.png and it's broken.

I feel like if both sites shared the same cache folder the images would appear.

Everything was fine til I did the %PUB changes. Like I said it's only effecting the alternate store views.
