Qual é o mais eficiente algoritmo para encontrar o retângulo com a maior área que vai caber no espaço vazio?
Vamos dizer que a tela se parece com isso ('#' representa cheia de área):

Normalmente eu iria gostar de descobrir uma solução.Apesar de este tempo que eu gostaria de evitar o desperdício de tempo se o incómodo de vaguear ao redor do meu próprio uma vez que este tem um uso prático para um projeto em que estou trabalhando.Há uma conhecida solução?

Sim, eu tenho uma estrutura que mantém o controle de um conjunto de janelas colocadas na tela.Eu também tenho uma grade que mantém o controle de todas as áreas entre cada borda, se elas estiverem vazias ou cheias, e a posição de pixel de sua esquerda ou para a extremidade superior.Eu acho que tem alguma forma modificada que iria tirar proveito dessa propriedade.Você sabe de alguma?

A implementação acima não é fantasia, é claro, mas é muito estreita para a explicação do Dr.Dobb do artigo e deve ser fácil de traduzir para o que for necessário.

Desde a pilha de solução já foi discutido em outras respostas, eu gostaria de apresentar uma ótima O(NM)
dinâmica de solução de programação que se origina a partir de usuário morrischen2008.
Intuição
Imagine um algoritmo onde para cada ponto de calculamos um retângulo, fazendo o seguinte:
Encontrar a altura máxima do retângulo por iteração para cima até que uma cheia de área é atingido
Encontrar o máximo da largura do retângulo por iteração para fora para a esquerda e para a direita até uma altura que não acomodar a altura máxima do retângulo
Por exemplo, encontrar o retângulo definido pelo ponto amarelo:
Sabemos que a máxima retângulo deve ser um dos retângulos construídos desta forma (o max e o retângulo deve ter um ponto em sua base, onde o próximo quadrado preenchido é altura acima desse ponto).
Para cada ponto, podemos definir algumas variáveis:

- a altura do retângulo definido por esse ponto

- o limite esquerdo do retângulo definido por esse ponto

- o limite direito do retângulo definido por esse ponto
