Exception in query downcasting to subclass with TREAT( ... as ... )

Question

I'm currently working on a school project and it requires some JPA. I'm not exactly an expert in this, so I thought I might ask you guys for some help.

It's a Maven project in NetBeans IDE, more specifically a Java Web application. I used a MySql database. I've got a situation where I have to check if a certain User is registered as a Guest for a Presentation. Now I would like to retrieve a list of Presentations for a certain Date where the Guest is registered for, so that i can check if none of those overlap.

It's as follows: A Presentation has an owner (Student) and a List of Users (Guests) who will attend this presentation. A Presentation also has a Date and a Time.

I configured it like this:

Date has TimeSlots (d.slots) and is either a Presentation or EmptyTime, a Presentation has a List of Guests (p.inschrijvingen) (and a guest has a username: i.useName) but the superclass (TimeSlot) does not! So in some way I have to cast it to Presentation, since all the TimeSlot objects from d.slots are not all Presentations

Now this was just some background, the problem itself is the query:

I did some research and found that I could use a TREAT to downcast my slots to Presentation For some reason it doesn't recognise the TREAT, or at least the bracket '('

Do any of you have an idea what it might be?

This is answered in the comments by Alan Hay, original comment:

As far as I know TREAT is part of the JPA 2.1 spec. You will therefore need to upgrade to Hibernate 4.3 or later. – Alan Hay May 12 '14 at 8:17
