Top 10 Toughest Entrance Exams in India
Life of students is a wholesome mix of intense hardship and occasional leisure. Talk about ‘exams’ and it is not hard to visualize the tormenting state that students of this generation are experiencing. The reason for such an experience is not unfound. To put in simple terms, the reason is ‘toughness.’ To get into top notch educational institutions and reputed universities, students need to crack the entrance exams.
This article will throw some light on some of the toughest entrance exams in India.
UPSC – Union Public Service Commission
UPSC is the administering body that conducts this examination in various tiers. The fact that toppers usually end up with not more than 40 percent of the overall marks is a testimony to the toughness of this exam. It is no exaggeration that aspirants should have knowledge on almost everything to crack this examination. It is estimated that more than five lakh aspirants appear for this exam every year and not more than 1600 make to the final round.
Indian Institute of Technology – Joint Entrance Examination
This entrance examination is given by aspirants who wish to pursue a Bachelors program from reputed Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. The success rate is as low as 1 in 45. Initially, IIT-JEE used to be a subjective exam assessing the aspirants’ caliber in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. As the years passed, it soon became an objective entrance examination with differential marking scheme. Let me draw an analogy here-Just as how wine gets better and better every year, JEE gets tougher and tougher.
XAT – Xavier Aptitude Test
Aspirants passionate about bagging a seat in Xavier Labor Relations Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur and other sister institutes such as Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneshwar etc. should score decent percentile in XAT. Apart from testing a candidate’s expertise in Quantitative Aptitude, Data Interpretation and Verbal Ability, XAT tests his/her expertise in Decision Making. There is a separate paper comprising General Awareness and Essay Writing sections. It is a paper based test and is generally conducted in the month of January.
CAT – Common Admission Test
Aspirants passionate about bagging a seat in the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) should give this exam and secure very good percentiles. An unreserved category student should score at least 97% percentile to get into IIMs. Aspirants are tested on Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation and Verbal Ability. It is usually conducted in the month of November. Also, candidates who wish to pursue an MBA from IITs and private institutes should score decent percentile in CAT. Every year, a little over two lakh members apply for CAT.
GATE – Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering
Aspirants passionate about pursuing a Master’s program in Technology from reputed Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore should give their best in this exam. It was once a pen and paper based test. However, in 2014, GATE became online. Many public sector companies including Maharatna and Navaratna companies accept GATE score and provide employment to the best performers.
CA – Chartered Accountancy Exam
This three-tier exam is administered and conducted by Institute of Chartered Accountants of India- ICAI. The first tier test is called CPT. CPT stands for Common Proficiency Test and this test comprises four dedicated sections one each on Economics, Quantitative Aptitude, Mercantile Laws and Accounting. The second tier is called Integrated Professional Competence Course and comprises of seven subjects. Should a candidate successfully clear tier 1 and tier 2 exams, he/she has to take the final tier-3 round where his/her mettle and intellect are tested to the fullest extent. The success rate is 8-16 percent.
IES – Indian Engineering Service
Having grabbed the headlines as one of the toughest exams, IES is taken by engineering graduate students belonging to either Electrical or Electronics or Mechanical or Civil Engineering backgrounds. It is estimated that more than two lakh members apply for this examination and not more than 434 members qualify. This speaks volumes about its toughness. Qualified members are appointed to a grade A service by the honorable President of India.
CLAT – Common Law Admission Test
There are sixteen reputed and highly esteemed National Law Universities in India. CLAT is taken by students who wish to pursue a Graduate program (Bachelors) and Post Graduate degree program (Masters) in the reputed law Universities. In other words, candidates aspiring to gain either an LLB or an LLM should write CLAT. The duration of this test is two hours and CLAT assesses candidates’ expertise in Numerical Ability, General Knowledge, English and Reading Comprehension sections.
AIIMS – All India Institute of Medical Sciences
As the appellation suggests, AIIMS is an online medical entrance exam conducted every year at national level for undergraduate students. Aspirants need tons of practice to ace all the four sections- Physics, Chemistry, Biology and General Knowledge. The total number of questions is 200 and the split is as follows: Physics-60, Chemistry-60, Biology-60 and General Knowledge-20. More than one lakh aspirants will give this exam every year.
NDA – National Defense Academy
NDA entrance exam is one of the toughest exams and undoubtedly deserves a place in the top 10. Candidates are recruited to Army, Air-force and Navy wings on the basis of their performance in this exam. Interestingly, NDA entrance exam is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Candidates are tested on Mathematics, General Ability, English and General Knowledge sections.
