Question

I've had the same keyboard for about 3 years now and it's getting pretty grimy and disgusting. I flip it over and try to bang out the crumbs from time to time and wipe it down with rubbing alcohol from time to time. That doesn't really seem to do the job.

Any other ideas? Covers? Rubber keyboards? Get a new keyboard?

Was it helpful?

Solution

I regularly (2x a year, probably) pop off the keys. This lets you have access to all sides of the key for cleaning, as well as the tray below.

Some people like using the dishwasher, but I'm not putting my G15 in a dishwasher. :-p

OTHER TIPS

I use a can of compressed air regularly to get the majority of the debris out but I haven't tried the dishwasher approach yet.

Jeff actually has a post about it.

I have learned to ignore the state of my keyboard. Only when the keys actually get sticky, I'll wipe ot with some cleaner I'll have laying around.

I guess I'm one of those disgusting, questionable hygiene type geeks. Although I am pretty anal about keeping my mouse clean... hmmm

I also pop of the keys of my keyboard and clean each key seperately once I find they are getting dirty. This takes about 45 minutes or an hour to do properly, including the tray. I think this isn't too bad given I use my keyboard for 8 hours a day most of the time...

Didn't even think of popping the keys off. Just did right now and it worked beautifully.
