EBAY API: findItemsAdvanced How do search by keyword and category?

Question

Been looking at the EBAY api tutorial

But I want to know how I can search according to category and keywords. I do this by using the operation findItemsAdvanced, but I don't really know what do here. I have been trying to make it work but what i get back is an empty page. Here's the html:

Solution

There are two slight errors in your code.

The first is the categoryId - in your example you're specifying categoryId=1. For video games on the US eBay site this should be categoryId=139973. This should then give you results in your API call.

The second problem is when you come to parse the API call on line 13:

var items = root.findItemsByKeywordsResponse[0].searchResult[0].item || [];

Your code is looking for a findItemsByKeywordsResponse but your API call is a findItemsAdvanced - therefore you need to change the line in your Javascript function to:

var items = root.findItemsAdvancedResponse[0].searchResult[0].item || [];

I've just tested this and it works perfectly!
