Domanda

I'm working on a game project licensed under GPL. Am I allowed to use a font licensed under SIL OFL 1.1 for text in the game?

Does it make any difference if the font isn't included in the source code and I only use it for text in image files?

Just to clarify. I don't own the font and I'm not going to edit or relicense it. I just want to use it in the game's menus.

The license of the font does not limit you in using it within some software, so I don't see any problem in using it within the menu.

In fact if you plan to re-distribute the font file, it is even necessary that you have a program next to it, because the license does not allow you to distribute the file alone.

Well, the font itself would be missing then when somebody would try to recreate the images probably, e.g. translating the software.

Just to clarify, the font will not become part of your software but stays a work on it's own. In your software you would just reference a font-file which could be easily replaced. So the font is nothing specific to the game program that it would not run any longer if replaced.

Additionally the font is under a FSF accepted free software license (SIL, they use it for their own website, too), so I assume that together with your GPL'ed game, you will find many friends.
