Como faço para definir o ContentPane sem usar o método principal ou chamar outros métodos?

Entendo que o seguinte define a cor de fundo do conteúdo. Como faço para definir uma imagem como seu plano de fundo?

Eu tentei estes:

• Definindo imagens de fundo em jframe
• Java: maneiras de preencher um quadro. add (), setContentPane (), getContentPane ()
• http://www.dreamincode.net/forums/topic/131439-setting-background-olor-content-pane/

Mas nenhum deles funcionou.
