Common Carrier Shipping Method Integration

Question

I want to ask you on one thing, is the term “Common Carrier” a generic terminology or is this a particular shipping method like FedEx, USPS? If this is a particular shipping method, what should i do to integrate this with my magento v1.4.2.0 application? Is this any extension available or any other help?

To me it seems like it is a generic term - as far as I know there’s no shipping service with this exact title.

Correct, this is just a generic/wildcard term for shipping carriers. It is not tied to any one in particular.
